Buying a Used Car in Kerala: The 2026 Checklist That Saves You Lakhs
Kerala's used car market is huge — and so is the gap between a good deal and an expensive mistake. After the flood years, hidden water damage joined odometer fraud on the list of things to check. Here is the complete buyer's checklist for 2026.
Before you even see the car
- Decide the budget including transfer costs: RC transfer, insurance transfer and any pending tax add 3–5% to the sticker price.
- Check the fair price range on multiple listing platforms so you recognise an overpriced car instantly.
- Shortlist single-owner cars with service history; they are worth the small premium.
The flood damage check (Kerala-specific)
Water-damaged cars from the 2018–2024 monsoon seasons still circulate. Check for: musty smell under fresh perfume, rust under the carpets and seat rails, foggy headlamp interiors, corroded seatbelt mounts and mismatched upholstery age. If the seller hesitates when you lift the carpet — walk away.
The 20-minute physical inspection
- Cold start — ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive; listen for rattles in the first 10 seconds.
- Panel gaps and paint depth — uneven gaps or paint texture changes signal accident repair.
- Tyres — uneven wear means alignment or suspension issues; four different brands means a careless owner.
- Oil cap and dipstick — milky residue indicates head gasket trouble.
- Electricals — every window, mirror, the AC at full blast, and all warning lamps on ignition.
Paperwork that must be perfect
RC book in seller's name, valid insurance, pollution certificate, NOC if there is a hypothecation (loan) on the car, and matching chassis/engine numbers. For inter-district purchases in Kerala, the RC transfer happens online via Parivahan but plan one visit to the RTO. Never pay the full amount before Form 29/30 are signed.
Where to buy
Direct from owners gives the best prices; established dealers offer warranty and handle paperwork for a margin. Authorised certified pre-owned programmes (Maruti True Value, Hyundai Promise and the like) cost more but de-risk the purchase. You can browse used cars across Kozhikode, Kochi, Thrissur and the rest of Kerala on Aioby's motors section — each listing shows year, kilometres, owner count and seller contact, and you can message the seller directly to arrange an inspection.
